This Thanksgiving we went to Southern Cal. to visit my grandparents and Jonathan's brothers. One of the highlights was Joseph's first trip to Disneyland. We decided after taking Esmerelda to Disneyland last year when she was two, that this was a great age to introduce the Magical Kingdom to our kids. Jonathan and I both grew up regularly visiting Disneyland when we were little, so we couldn't wait for our kids to meet Mickey, Minnie and the crew in person. This time of year is especially fun, since in addition to the already spectacular sights of Disneyland, it is "amped up" with Christmas decorations and lights - truly a sight! Given Joseph's increasing fears of any and all things, we were certain that something at Disneyland would frighten him and were prepared to have to cut his day short if he went ballistic on us during a ride. So we thought we would start him out nice and easy by taking him on the Storybook canal ride. You know that ride where you go through the really big whale's mouth (most of us know it by sight but never considered spending time in line to ride it - we, on the other hand, have it first on our list for our two year old Disney novices). Well he did great in line, but once we got on the boat and he turned around to see that we were slowly approaching the whale's enormous mouth and jagged teeth, he completely lost it. It was too late to turn back and we had to wrestle him tight to keep him from going overboard. Once we entered the mouth and were on the other side of his teeth, Joseph immediately stopped screaming and then slowly said "Oh! that wasn't scary" in his adorable two year old voice. That was all it took and the rest of the day was great! When he met Mickey Mouse he ran to him and buried his body into him for a big hug. "It's a Small World" ride and "Cinderella's castle" were lit up beautifully. When we were kids we always wondered what kind of crazy people would sit and wait on the side of Main Street for an hour before the parade - now I know - it's exhausted parents! I couldn't wait to sit on the curb for an hour and veg out waiting for the parade to start. Last year we found the perfect spot and we scouted it out again this year. We ended the day with a ride on the Disneyland Railway around the park which was, of course, our train-loving-Joseph's favorite ride. As for Esmerelda, she enjoyed Disneyland even more this year and conquered her fear from last year by riding the Winnie the Pooh ride again! I think it will be decades before these kids get near a roller coaster :) It was definitely a magical day for all of us!
